Business Description

Flashpub operates community specific scientific journals for rapidly emerging research stories. Built around a much smaller, faster research article, our journals empower scientists to advance their career and lead global research programs without waiting years to publish.

We reimagined the basic unit of scientific progress – the research article – for collaborative, networked, decentralized science in a web3 ecosystem.

A smarter, faster research article

We are the first academic journal to rapidly publish and review discrete units of scientific discovery. Rather than spending years independently collecting data and often unknowingly redoing the work of others, we make it easy for researchers to actively lead their communities down exciting lines of collaborative inquiry.

Campaigns

Our journals allow scientists to advance their career with collaborative streams of research articles called campaigns. Campaigns use simple, elegant data visualizations as a focal point for emerging results on specific topics or challenges.

Led by a principal investigator and steering committee, our workflow balances the explosive potential of expert crowdsourcing with quality control and rigorous scientific oversight.

Campaigns flip the prevailing incentive structure in science by focusing on rapid, open, iterative progress across a community, instead of slow, private progress within individual labs. Our model rewards collaboration, leadership, community validation, scientific rigor, and ultimately more trustworthy results.

Problem

Publishing a scientific article can take months or years, costs thousands of dollars, and operates at a snail’s pace that is fundamentally out of step with the speed of modern science.

This means that the bulk of scientific results are left unpublished- including critical replications, corrections, and methods that could speed up discovery workflows.

Solution

Flashpub’s scientific journals enjoy a modern publishing workflow designed around smaller, faster articles that capture emerging stories and fuel collaborative networks of innovation.

Our approach is unapologetically forward looking, grounded in the principles of open science and anticipating emerging web3 and decentralized science (DeSci) technologies. When researchers publish in a flashpub.io journal, their content is automatically integrated with the DeSci ecosystem such as blockchain based literature indexes and rapid funding mechanisms such as Science Fund (sciencefund.io).

Business Model

We do not charge to publish or read scientific articles which are basic academic rights and required for an inclusive, thriving global research community. Our pricing model kicks in only for campaigns (visualized collections of articles) – basic campaigns are just $99 and custom developed campaigns and integrations range from $1k – $3k+.

Traction & Customers

Our first journal Outbreak (currently in beta testing) focuses on pandemic informatics research to understand the evolving dynamics of Covid-19 and how to better prepare for the next pandemic.

The company is pre-revenue while we pilot our services and improve functionality with early adopters.

Market Projection

Our market is rapidly evolving and difficult to project. We anticipate the total addressable market to be approximately $3 billion, and our serviceable addressable market to be $1 billion. The current academic publishing industry, based on paywalls and publishing fees which we do not use, is approximately a $25 billion market.

Competition

Our primary competition is academic publishers who focus on original, peer reviewed results. However, these same competitors are also partners in many instances, as our service models do not completely overlap and present synergistic opportunities. We also compete to a lesser degree with atypical publishing platforms such as preprint servers and researcher social networks.
